The beautiful thing about growth for me is how much you learn and grow. I have been a lot more intentional about the choices I make to keep my skin healthy and of course, my journey began with a lot of mistakes I made. I take a special joy in keeping myself updated with skincare best practices and I can confidently say I have adapted to certain habits which have helped my journey.
The 60 Second Rule
This rule is a game-changer for your skincare. I discovered the rule 2 years ago from an amazing beauty blog I follow avidly. This basically requires you to spend at least 60 seconds while you’re going through your face wash routine to get the ingredients in your product to work effectively. I usually follow this rule at night after a long day at work. It really is effective in reaping the benefits products offer. I usually do 2 minutes or stick to 60 seconds on days when I am beat.
The Double Cleanse
I find this a very effective way to get all the dirt and excess sebum on your face after a long day at work or school. It is an everyday routine for me except that it is strictly for my morning routine. I have a habit with oily skin and the act of double cleansing helps me breakdown excess sebum and I have less or no breakouts. My first step is the oil cleanse which is carried out with a cleansing balm or an actual oil. I based the whole idea of an oil cleanser on the fact that water does not dissolve oil but oil can dissolve oil. Not only does it give my makeup a total meltdown, but it also dislodges the excess sebum and dirt my face may have carried until morning. My second step follows through with a facial cleanser.
Exfoliate All Over
You’re supposed to exfoliate your face once to twice a week- but are you showing the same love to the rest of your body? Gently using a body scrub can transform the texture of your skin and can really help reveal some gorgeous skin!
Staying Consistent
I struggled with being consistent in my early stages of getting into skincare routines. But thankfully I am getting a hang of it and staying consistent as much as possible because that’s the only way you’ll get results.
I noticed that during my inconsistent days I hardly got the results I expected to get. So this consistency is definitely a habit to adopt.
Following Skincare Trends
Skincare trends are a thing and always go viral on the internet with a lot of beauty enthusiasts and bloggers being a lot more vocal about their skincare practices and hacks. Of course we get influenced by the things they drew us to on the internet especially and end up adopting such habits. But I realized not everything is for everyone in the skincare space. What I do is stick to what works for me and if I come across some new product or technique, I won’t jump on it but do my research first. Jumping on every beauty trend isn’t the way to go. In adopting habits to suit my skincare needs, one thing I noticed was the fact that personal hygiene is key.
Dry Brush
I’ve been dry brushing off and on for a few years now and I think it’s a great habit to get into. As with anything, do your research and make sure it’s right for you. Dry Brushing is a great way to exfoliate, improve circulation and helps improve the appearance of cellulite!
Drink More Water
I know, I know you’ve probably heard this million times. But a friendly reminder hurt no one. So chug some H2O! Text your friends and remind them! Tweet it! Your skin and body will thank you, I promise. I have a hard time remembering to drink water but little reminders help a long way.
Cleanse Every Morning
Doing the double cleanse first thing in the morning takes extra effort but if you use oil-infused products before bedtime or sway on the oily side, your skin may feel extra refreshed and moisturized from a double cleanse, and the new layers of skincare products you apply may perform more effectively after washing away the dead skin and oil that accumulated overnight.
A safe way to determine what kind of morning cleansing regimen is best for you is to consider your skin type, current skin condition, and beauty products you’re using. Just remember that whether Team PM or Team AM&PM, skincare aficionados wholeheartedly agree that skin does need to be cleansed somehow in the morning!
These good habits may require extra time and effort, but they can make a dramatic difference in your skin. Which of these cleansing habits do you already practice? Any other good ones you’d like to share with us?
