Curly hair is not just about good looks, it’s also about maintenance and care. Here are tips and tricks for taking care of your curly hair and achieving the perfect look to go with it! Finding the right hair product and technique to have curly hair looking glam has been a struggle for days and I am sure many other curly hair girls have at least come across a problem or two on how to maintain their natural curls. Finding that perfect look doesn’t always turn out the same every time but we may have perhaps figured out one or two tricks that work for us over time.
First step to getting started is to figure out the type of your hair. When it comes down to just curly hair, it is even better to understand exactly the type of hair you have.
Picking the right shampoo and conditioner
While finding out what hair type you have is one of the first steps of understanding your crown, having a proper hair routine is also important, thus beginning with washing your hair will be the first and foremost step to avoiding product build ups, dirt and excessive oil on the scalp and ultimately promote beautiful natural curly hair. When deciding on the type of shampoo and conditioner that is right for your curly hair, stay away from toxic chemicals such as alcohol, sulfate and any parabens which are causes of dryness, breakages and suffocates the hair cuticles from absorbing all the right nutrients. The best option is to find products that are plant based- Anything natural is your hair’s best friend.
How much products should you apply to your hair?
Your hair requires care and loving thus when it comes to applying the product, be generous as your hair will very much need all the rich nutrients until the next hair wash. You might also wonder, so how often should you wash your hair given the generous amount of products applied to your curls after washing it, well if you have a thin hair perhaps twice a week is good enough however if you have a thicker curly hair, the best time is once a week, which is also ideally the best for any curl hair type as well.
Detangling
If you find that your hair tends to be frizzy and tangled like most curly haired girls, stay calm and remember that it is normal. What you should do is to deep moisturize your hair and stay away from aggressive brushing. In fact, stay away from brushing your hair, instead use a comb that has wider teeth to help you separate your hair gently starting from the bottom up .
Hydrating with a mask
The key to a long lasting shine, is applying a hydrating mask after conditioning your hair, until your next hair wash day. Not only is your hair fighting from the toxic chemicals in the air, the sun’s rays may also cause dryness and frizziness to your curls, thus hydrating is important. When applying your hydrating mask, divide your hair into four sections as you apply a generous amount to each section and when you’re done, wrap it in a shower cap to allow the hair cuticles to open up and absorb all the rich nutrients for about 20 minutes before washing out the products. While doing this, allow your curls to remain shiny and bouncy throughout.
Drying Off
After washing, try avoiding the use of drying off with a regular towel as this may cause frizziness. When it comes to having that perfect bouncy hair texture, allowing your hair to air dry helps to fully absorb nutrients and keep your hair feeling alive and moisturized. Suppose you diffuse with a diffuse, try to squeeze out excess water using a microfiber towel in a scrunching motion to refrain from ruining your curls. Before using the diffuser, apply a thermal hair protectant cream or gel to protect your hair from any heat then place your hair in between the teeth of the diffuser and dry till your hair is 100% dry. Keep in mind that heat is not a friend of your curly hair as it destroys and dries out the moisture in your hair thus, using heat protectant creams help to lock moisture in your hair before applying any heat.
Trim off the tips
This is not commonly said but to have healthy and flawless looking curls, it is best to cut off the ends of your hair at least 6-8 weeks of a time period, to avoid having split ends and a frizzy look. By trimming off the ends, this removes any dead looking hair whilst achieving a healthy look.
